Dr. Joshua Friedlander
Born in Pittsburgh, Joshua Friedlander started learning the violin at age 4. At 16, he began to study in New York with Sally Thomas, the assistant to the late legendary violin pedagogue Ivan Galamian. Dr. Friedlander then continued his studies with her at the Mannes College of Music.
In 1999, he was accepted to the Orchestral Studies program at Wayne State University and studied with Geoffrey Applegate, Principal Second Violinist of the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra. In 2002, he continued his studies at Florida State University as a teaching assistant for five years to the esteemed violin professor Eliot Chapo earning his master’s and doctorate degrees in Music.
Dr. Friedlander has been part of numerous symphony orchestras spanning more than 20 years. In Washington, Dr. Friedlander has played as Assistant Concertmaster for the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra, Assistant Concertmaster for the Federal Way Orchestra, and Assistant Concertmaster for the Olympia Symphony Orchestra. In 2016, Dr. Friedlander was on a panel discussion for 89.9FM All Classical Portland as an expert on the violin concerto (1938) of Jewish-Swiss composer Ernest Bloch hosted by All Classical Portland’s Robert McBride.
Currently, Dr. Friedlander is teaching violin/viola privately and is part of the music faculty at St. Martin’s University and is an adjunct professor at Centralia College. This talented and versatile musician is also working on music articles for publication regarding composer Ernest Bloch. He resides with his wife and two children in Olympia.
